Welcome to our homeschool. Read about the journey God took me while working in my heart to change my views about learning and education.
I hated school
Homeschool - what do you think of when you hear that word?
I remember years ago the first time I heard about homeschooling. I thought it was weird. This was back in the 1980's. I was a child and in school at the time. I had never heard of such a thing.
As a teen I grew to hate school. My family moved around a lot. I suffered from awful depression, I didn't care about school and well we just a really sad person. I could have cared less about my grades, failing school and stuff like that.
I dropped out of school and got my GED at age 17. My parents had to get special permission from the state and did so through my psychiatrists & doctors.
God opens my eyes to homeschoolng . . .
I got married at just 18 1/2. Right before I got married I had started babysitting for some women who had a weekly bible study. A few of the women were homeschooling moms. My family never went to church, but I knew some about God from my uncle. I felt safe around the women. Their kids behaved and the moms talked to me like a person, not a child or teen.
One of the homeschooling moms had a girl who was 13 & twin sons who were around 10. I was amazed at how the kids would sit and behave. They would talk to the adults and wouldn't mind playing with the babies. I had never in my life seen 10yr old boys want to play with a 1yr old! lol I was shocked. I liked what I saw & wanted that in my life.
Learning about homeschooling
By the time my oldest was about two I had seriously thought about homeschooling. I had seen a few reports on tv shows like Dateline or 20/20 about how more families were homeschooling. This was about 1998 or so. I had met a few more homeschooling families and talked to them also about it.
My biggest worry was could I teach! I had dropped out of school in the 10th grade. When I dropped out I was going to have to repeat the 10th grade. My spelling is awful, I am so horrible at math and plus I have dyslexia! I had so many doubts about myself.
I am not a patient either! I would rather my kids go off school each do so I could I could have peace and quiet! lol
But the more and more I argued God found ways to show me this is what He wants our family do to do.
God shows us homeschooling is for us
By the time I was expecting my second child in 1999 there were a lot of school shootings going on. My oldest child was still to young to go to school, but when I saw that it pretty much hit me that we need to homeschool.
It wasn't the school shootings that did it, I guess you would say that is the straw that broke the camels back for me. lol I had tons of other reasons why I wanted to homeschool and before that keeping my kids safe from bullies, kids bring guns to school & drugs were far from my mind at the time. I had never even thought about schools being dangerous before then.
Also around that time my husband & I started hitting up a lot yard sales. I knew that homeschooling could cost a lot of money so I started hunting for stuff to use in our homeschool when my oldest was just 3 1/2. I was shocked at all the great stuff we found.
But one day we hit the jackpot! It was about 12:30 or so. Yard sales were winding down, we were tired and oldest was hungry. We stopped at our last stop on our list since I mentioned they had some school supplies. The drive way was smack full of stuff and a sign said. FREE TAKE WHAT YOU WANT. lol Well we took. We loaded up our van. As I went from box to box I almost cried. It was full of stuff for teaching. I found wonderful hand made blocks to teach kids how to write their letters, boxes full of teachers books, games and pretty much you name it. It was like a blessing from God. While we were loading up the van a man came out and mentioned how his wife was a former school teacher. What a blessing that was for me.
Learning every day
I have now homeschooled my kids from day one. My oldest is now almost 11 and never been in a real classroom.
My second child joined us at the kitchen table for the first time this year.
My third child is still to young to join us but does at times.
I am far from an expert in homeschooling. I learn something new every day about teaching my kids. Sometimes I feel the weight of being their main educator just pulling me down. It is a tough title to carry. Then I remember God. He is in control of all of this.
Every morning before school we read a devotion and I give the days lessons to God. I couldn't teach my kids without Him guiding me.
